The ERP Directive

The ErP Directive is designed to reduce carbon emissions across Europe. In force since 2015, ErP applies to a vast spread of energy consuming products including domestic and commercial heating products.

Boilers, water heaters, hot water stores and heat pumps are all in scope. The suite of regulations under the Directive require specific compliance measures: The Energy Labelling Regulation requires heating products up to 70kW rated output, or 500 litres of hot water storage, to clearly display their efficiency grade which ranges from A++ to G. Energy labels help customers identify and choose products which save energy.

Ecodesign regulations place performance and emissions requirements on products below 400kW rated output or 2000 litres of hot water storage - this is split into two parts; Lot 1 (space heaters) and Lot 2 (water heaters and storage cylinders).

Manufacturers have a duty to place compliant products on the market and there is no distinction between new build and retrofit projects.

So, what does this mean in practice? For gas fired boilers , if we calculate gross seasonal efficiency using Part L Building Regulations formulae, the equivalent minimum seasonal efficiency is 92.5% This means small to medium sized projects will need a condensing boiler solution.

We have future proofed our condensing boiler technology; relevant products are ErP compliant and you can download the labels from our literature library. They are also low NOx and we're continuing to invest in research and development to make our products even more energy efficient.
